Thesis: Low-latency audio communications
In the context of the research activities of the Internet Media Group, we are looking for a master thesis student with strong interests in creating a low-latency audio communication system over LAN by exploring the possibilities offered by tools such as the Jack Audio Connection, gstreamer and possibly the real-time options of the Linux kernel (Linux Real-Time). The initial experiments will be performed on a standard PC. Depending on the results, further experimentation can be carried out on some small-factor boards such as Raspberry Pi or similar. Depending on the results of the first experiments, the development of some test programs may be required to integrate the existing software.
Requirements:
- Good knowledge of Linux (installation/management of packages and configuration)
- Knowledge of digital multimedia signal representation
- Knowledge of programming in C

Nell’ambito delle attività di ricerca dell’Internet Media Group, si ricerca uno studente interessato a creare un sistema di comunicazione audio a basso ritardo su rete LAN valutando le possibilita’ offerte da strumenti quali Jack Audio Connection, gstreamer e possibilmente le opzioni real-time del kernel di Linux (Linux Real-Time). Gli esperimenti iniziali saranno effettuati su un PC standard. Sulla base dei risultati ulteriori sperimentazioni potranno essere condotte su piccole schede di elaborazione quali Raspberry Pi o simili. Secondo quanto appreso nei passi precedenti potrebbe essere necessario sviluppare qualche programma di test per integrare il software esistente.
Requisiti :
- Buona conoscenza di Linux (installazione/gestione dei pacchetti e loro configurazione)
- Conoscenza delle rappresentazioni digitali dei segnali multimediali (audio/video)
- Conoscenza della programmazione in linguaggio C
